What can be imagined may well be possible. Drilling one’s gaze into a painting, layer upon layer, is something revealed - an inner core, an origin of some kind? How many levels are required for a painting to no longer be a sheer surface, but a plane of contact or a subject with its own inner life? Leena Nio’s paintings may indeed offer escape routes, yet not as windows out of real. Rather, they engage us with other imaginable worlds and mindscapes.
